So this past Monday was my birthday. I celebrated over the weekend and I had a wonderful time with my friends and family. Earlier that day, I attended my cousin and his girlfriend’s baby shower in which his girlfriend arrived almost 2 hours late….#FAIL.
Regardless, I had a great time and I realized the importance of friends and family – not just in celebrating my birthday, but really appreciating the special occasions we can spend together. The end of last year was a very rough time for my family. Our house in Warner Robins burned from the inside and is pretty much irreparable, the day before our house burned down my mother’s father, my grandfather died and then to top it off my dog of 13 years passed away 2 days before Christmas! Between stress and the holidays I gained 8 lbs!
Before this time, I hadn’t really experienced death or too difficult of hardships. But I must say that although at some points it was very painful and stressful, it made me appreciate life more. When you’re in your 20’s sometimes its easy to forget how precious life is, because it seems like a given. With recent tragedies like Haiti, it quickly brings you back to reality but it’s so easy to ignore that feeling or morbidness once you turn off the TV or the computer.
So if I may impart some knowledge and lessons learned from this past year, I would say:
1. Appreciate and spend more time with your loved ones.
2. Life is not promised and death does not discriminate.
3. You only have one life to live, so make your life filled with purpose. Don’t have a purpose? Seek it.
4. Deepen (or establish) a relationship with God.
4. Finally, don’t be late to your own baby shower. It tends to piss people off!
And that is all people! Tomorrow I am heading to the SoCon10 conference at Kennesaw State University. I’m sure I’ll have plenty to share regarding the latest and greatest in Social Media Strategy!
